Day 14 ✷Tin Sleeper Pups
For as long as anyone can remember, the Wayfolk have believed these cute little creatures to be a type of greeble that they affectionately call a womplet.
They are often spotted roaming around the crooked wood. They're soft and curious and surprisingly friendly but can often disappear for weeks or months at a time. Nobody seems concerned about thes disappearances, for there are far stranger things in the wood to be worrying about than strange greeble behaviours.
But the Wayfolk are mistaken.
For deep beneath the crooked wood, far below the roots of even the largest and oldest of trees, there are things far older than the paths above them
But when a soul finds themselves lost in the darkest and most disorienting parts of the wood, something will stir beneath the earth. The tin sleepers. (the grown up ones anyway)
They are absolutely massive creatures, traversing the underground passages beneath the wood. They find all the poor souls that find themselves lost, afraid and alone and deep in the dead of night, will transport them to the house of Mothiwumpus to be found again.
Tin sleepers are not born made of tin. They begin their lives as soft and almost velvetty, cuddly friends spend their early days above ground until something calls them to the earth. And they sleep, for weeks, for months, years and sometimes even decades at a time. As the years pass, the earth slowly changes them. The soft bodies harden due to minerals gathering on their skin and the dampness of the underground landscape leaves them with a lovely patina that resembles tin.
There are old folkloric stories of huge train like beings that resemble metal moles and reports of distant whistles echoing through the trees when someone goes missing but since no-one has ever seen one, nobody really knows they exist.
Yet for years and years, the tin sleepers have been gathering lost travellers and delivering them to safety of the house. The passengers never remember their journey to the house of Mothiwumpus, just that they found it when they needed it the most and arrive feeling like they had the most rejuvenating sleep of their lives.
