Ernie Barleybritches had been standing in the same field for many many years.
He could only remember the past 2 or 3 as the rest had been eaten by crows.
He wasn’t that bothered about it really as nothing very exciting ever happened in the field and no events occurred that he needed to remember.
The seeds would be sown, the crops would grow, the farmer would harvest them and it would get cold for a while.
Rinse and repeat.
Every autumn the farmer would come to replace ernie’s straw.
Big handfuls would be pulled out of his sleeves and he’d be stuffed full of the fresh stuff.
He really hated stuffing day.
It wasn’t painful or anything but the old straw had been with him for a long time and he felt that they had become good friends and he didnt have many of those.
But one year the farmer forgot to come
Ernie stood through a really cold winter with a hole in his side and when the wind blew through him, it made a funny noise
By spring, he noticed that a small green wiggly thing had begun to appear beneath his coat.
Little by little it grew and by the summer it had become a flower
It was the most beautiful thing Ernie had ever seen and he was deeply deeply moved by the fact that it had chosen to stay with him
(not like the crows or the crops or the farmer)
For the first time ever, Ernie found something finally worth living for.
He was scared to lose and forget the most beautiful thing he’d ever known but sadly and soon enough the flower began to wither.
Ernie tried to hold on with all his might but he couldn’t break the laws of life anymore than he could he stop the crows from pecking away at his memory.
So Ernie made a decision that would leave his field.
and went off in search of a place where memories were safe from crows.
